Coming back to the dialysis, Let me talk through the process... So when the kidney becomes dysfunctional, the tasks of kidney are left pending, hence, a thing called cretanine rises in the body as it is not removed(blame the sleeping kidney neurons). In the process of dialysis(discovered by  Dr.  Willem Kolff  )  these steps are done Blood taken out from the body Cleaned from cretanine + sodium + potassium +urea etc Blood returned to the body So these steps are done for the whole blood in the body. For steps 1 and 3, the first incision was made on my body at the neck(called Line). Later after my discharge from the hospital  A new incision was made on my right chest(called Catheter).
